Lancaster's Orphans

The Return of Lancaster

Robert J. Randisi

The Ghost with Blue Eyes Most authors know that it can be difficult to let a good character go. And such was the case for me with Lancaster, who originally appeared in The Ghost With Blue Eyes.

When we first met him, Lancaster was a gunman who had accidentally killed a small girl during a gunfight. Following the incident he turned to the bottle, became a town drunk, and dreamed about the ghost with blue eyes almost every night. When another little girl comes to town and is in trouble he sees a chance to make amends.

I wanted to write about Lancaster again because I like him, but I chose to leave some of the dark aspects behind as he tries to rebuild his life. Now he does not want to go back to being a gunman. He's grown beyond that.

In Lancaster's Orphans, Lancaster, instead of getting involved with one child, becomes involved with many. Along the way he also crosses paths with men who have their own psychological quirks. What I ended up with was—I think—a fitting follow up to Ghost.

Lancaster is still trying to live down the incidents that changed him in the opening of his first novel, but he's come a long way already, and is not quite the same dark character he was. Then again, he still doesn't smile a whole lot. But who knows? If there's yet another sequel he might give in to a big belly laugh yet.

Keep an eye out for The Funeral of Tanner Moody, a collaborative novel that revolves around Tanner Moody's funeral and wake, which is attended by people who tell stories about him. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to learn who the narrator of the book is. But you'll have to buy it to see. In addition to featuring an original story from John Jakes, it will also include contributions from Elmer Kelton, Jory Sherman, Pete Brandvold and others. The Funeral of Tanner Moody will be available this summer.

Thanks to all the readers out there who show an interest in my books. I will always try my best to keep you well entertained.
