In the great tradition of John le Carré comes a gripping spy thriller from a highly talented new voice in fiction. Jack King is a pseudonym for a former top-secret courier for the Polish government, who was privy to all the ins and outs of covert maneuvering on a global scale. Now he has turned that experience into a fantastic debut that resonates with authenticity.

The Fifth Internationale

FACT IN FICTION

by Jack King

My aim as a writer is to create as believable situations and characters as possible. In my novels you won't find superheroes, or super-spies who know everything about any conceivable subject, be it a newest weapon, or a culinary recipe. My characters aren't the sort of people who single-handedly wipe out trained armies of countless assassins. They are ordinary human beings, charged with challenging circumstances. Sometimes they succeed, sometimes they don't.

Set in the hotbed of Central Europe, The Fifth Internationale is highly relevant to today's politics. Now that the Iron Curtain has come crashing down, Eastern bloc countries are trying to rebuild. But in The Fifth Internationale, there are men determined to grab power at any cost, building a global conspiracy that will allow them to manipulate world governments to their own end.

The only man who stands in their way is an FBI agent whose routine desk job is forever changed when an old friend is murdered. Does he stand a change against a conspiracy of the most powerful men in the world, men who will stop at nothing to protect themselves?

The Fifth Internationale is set against some historically true events, in an effort to make it believable. The story, although fictional, is not that far-fetched and is closely tied to the world I know personally and professionally. Reading and recognizing contextual events, enlivens the "I know this," or "This really happened," and suddenly the novel takes on an altered angle, and the reader starts to wonder. Is it real? What's the message?

The political and economic changes in Eastern Europe had, and continue to have, an enormous impact on the world at large, providing writers such as myself with plenty of subjects to explore: dirty politics, economic espionage... The latter has now replaced the Cold War spying in its ferociousness. With the United Europe aiming to reclaim a position on the international scene, equal or surpassing that of the United States there is plenty to watch out for. There is a world of differences between the US and EU, and everything suggests these differences will become even deeper. Will former allies become enemies? They already are.

If you don't want to wait for the news to unfold, then read my future novels instead. They explore subjects that impact the world. Times of local politicizing are long gone. Any decisions made in any part of the world impact the rest. Unfortunately for us, there seem to be those who believe that the World is their "playground." Fortunately for me, as a writer, they provide enough timely material to create tales of intrigue and suspense that are not that far fetched. Hopefully they are NOT true...
